The Laboratory of Remote Sensing Spectroscopy and Geographic Information Systems specializes in monitoring and evaluation of agricultural resources (crop mapping, soil mapping, agricultural water use), monitoring the impact of agricultural activity on the environment (mapping the degradation of wetlands and aquatic vegetation, quality monitoring of water bodies, development of early warning systems), and precision agriculture applications.

Role in the COTTONCHAIN Cooperation Group:

The Laboratory of Remote Sensing Spectroscopy and Geographic Information Systems of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki undertakes the following activities:

  • The collection of satellite images for the extraction of plant vigour indices (NDVI) and assistance in the coupling of these with the Cottonchain AFI Mobile App & Cottonchain AFIS Portal.
  • Development of a harvest decision making system based on climate and moisture data of seed cotton.
  • The supply, installation and monitoring of a system of telemetric and self-cleaning cotton bollworm traps (Trapview).

THRAKIKA EKKOKISTIRIA S.A. (Partner)

Thrakika Ekkokkistiria S.A. is one of the largest and oldest cotton ginning mills in Greece. The facility is located in northeastern Greece, right outside the town of Komotini. The company was founded in 1972 in Komotini and for many years was the only ginning mill in eastern Macedonia and Thrace. As with all ginning mills in Greece, the company buys seed cotton from cotton farmers, processes it through ginning, and then sells the ginned cotton.  

It is not a coincidence that the company’s name has been connected to the history of cotton crop in Thrace. The company’s close collaboration with farmers and its expertise in processing, storing, and distributing the product have been crucial factors for the fast development of cotton farming in the area. Giving particular attention to the quality of its products and good service for its clients, the company very quickly established itself in the textile manufacturing industry and maintains a reputation as a credible and reliable supplier in Greece as well as internationally.  

During the last decade, and amid the financial crisis in Greece, the company grew further and now operates three ginning mills: two in Rodopi and one in Provatonas in Evros.  

The company’s main business policiy have always been and still are insistence for quality, protection of the environment and adherence to innovation.  

Thrakika Ekkokkistiria S.A. undertakes the following activities:  

  • Ensuring the traceability of seed cotton up to produced cotton lint bales.

KARAGIORGOS BROS. SA is one of the largest ginning companies in Greece. The company was founded in 1951. Today, the second generation of the Karagiorgos family has taken the reins of the company operating three privately owned ginning facilities in all the main areas of cotton production in Macedonia and Thrace. The company employes about 100 permanent and 400 seasonal staff. The number of collaborating cotton farmers amounts to approximately 20,000. The company also operates in cereal commerce, agrochemical sales and in electric power production through renewable energy sources.
